RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore DeAndre’ Bembry scored a team-high 16 points to lead four Hawks in double figures, but the Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team ultimately fell to 20th-ranked VCU, 89-74, at the Siegel Center on Saturday afternoon.
VCU (13-3 overall, 3-0 Atlantic 10) led the whole way, scoring the first nine points of the game. The Hawks scored seven of the next nine, however, to cut it to 11-7 on a Bembry dunk at the 13:42 mark. After a 9-3 spurt gave the Rams a 20-10 lead with 10:50 to play, SJU went on an 11-2 run of its own to cut it to 22-21 on a layup by senior Chris Wilson with 8:12 remaining.
The Rams took over at that point, scoring the next 10 points to go ahead 32-21 with 5:13 left. VCU extended the run to 18-4 to push the margin to 40-25 at the 2:59 mark, and ultimately took a 46-30 advantage into the break.
VCU pushed its lead to as large as 27, leading 67-40 with 12:29 to go, but Saint Joseph’s (6-8 overall, 0-3 Atlantic 10) began to claw back into the game over the closing minutes. A pair of free throws by Miles with 5:10 to go would get the Hawks within 14 at 80-66, but that would be as close as SJU would come, and the Rams emerged with the 15-point win.
Melvin Johnson led all scorers with 20 points, while Treveon Graham chipped in 19 for the Rams.
Saint Joseph’s returns to action on Wednesday night when Fordham visits Hagan Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
