PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team took part in the Penn Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania over the weekend.
There was no team scoring in the event, but participants played in a dual match format, earning points based on singles and doubles flight victories.
On Friday, the Hawks were matched up with Penn State and Georgetown. In singles play, sophomore Tristan Boustany won the first of his three matches on the weekend, taking down Georgetown's Alex Tropiano, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. On the doubles side, senior Mike Fallone and freshman Peter Dewitt combined for an 8-5 win over a duo from Penn, while junior Andres Urrea and sophomore Kyle Chalmers earned an 8-6 victory over a pair from Georgetown.
SJU met up with Lehigh on Saturday and took three of four doubles matches from the Mountain Hawks. Chalmers and Urrea won the first-flight match, 6-0, senior Pierre Brondeau and junior Renier Moolman were 6-3 winners at number two, and senior Jason Sisti teamed with junior Sam Cadwell for a 6-3 third-flight win. Boustany notched a singles win over Mitchell Petersen, 6-4, 6-3, while Urrea was a 7-6 (1), 6-2 winner over Jeremy Kochman.
The Hawks finished off the weekend with matches against local rival Temple. The Owls won three of four doubles tilts, but freshmen Grant Boyle and Nick Ringle notched a 6-2 win in the fourth flight for SJU.
Singles were a different story, however, as the Hawks pulled in five wins, including each of the first four flights. Moolman topped Nicolas Paulus, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4, while Urrea won in straight sets over Hicham Belkssir, 6-2, 7-5. Chalmers was a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 winner over Filip Stipcic and Valentijn van Erven battled past the Owls' Vineet Naran, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.
Boustany then finished off his 3-0 weekend with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Santiago Canete.
Saint Joseph's will send a contingent to the ITA Regional Championships next month in Charlottesville, Virginia, to wrap up the fall portion of the slate.
