SPORTS MEDICINE DEPARTMENT

The Saint Joseph's Sports Medicine Department serves the student-athlete population through the prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

 

The Sports Medicine Department works closely with team physicians to provide the student-athletes with the best medical care possible. Team orthopedist Michael Ciccotti, M.D. (www.rothmaninstitute.com), Edward Gorrie, M.D. in student health, along with nurse practitioner Laura Hurst, Eugene Hong, M.D., the University's family medicine-sports specialist, and Marc DeoDato, DC (chiropractor) work together to insure that the student-athletes at SJU receive the best possible care.  Weekly visits for Orthopedics occur on Tuesday afternoons, Primary Care Sports Medicine on Thursday afternoons and at Student Health with Laura Hurst from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Dr. Gorrie is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Student Health located in Sourin Hall on the ground floor. Chiropractic care is available Thursday mornings.  In addition to physician visits, Rob O'Brien, a physical therapist provided through MainLine Health Rehabilitation, is on campus to treat the entire University community.  

 

The Sports Medicine Staff is comprised of six certified athletic trainers. Saint Joseph's University is also a clinical-affiliated site for Neumann University, Central Michigan University, Eastern University, Salisbury State University, Dublin City University (Ireland) and the Institute of Technology at Carlow (Ireland). Throughout the school year, SJU hosts 5-10 interns from other universities/colleges who, as part of their educational experience, work with Hawk student-athletes.

Staff

Lori A. Sweeney, Ph.D., ATC
Director of Sports Medicine

Lori Sweeney has worked at SJU for 22 years, serving 13 years as the head athletic trainer after two years as an assistant on the staff before being named the Director of Sports Medicine. Sweeney coordinates the medical services for all student-athletes. Prior to coming to SJU, she was an administrative assistant and instructor at Temple, worked at Pennsbury (Pa.) and Montgomery (N.J.) high schools and did a two-year stint at Rutgers. The Bridgewater, N.J., native completed her Ph.D. in kinesiology with a concentration in sports medicine from Temple in 2000 with a concentration in sports medicine. She received a bachelor's of science degree from East Stroudsburg (1986) and a master's degree from Trenton State College (1988). She lives in Havertown, Pa. and has two children, Grace and K.T.

William C. Lukasiewicz, M.Ed., ATC
Head Athletic Trainer

Bill Lukasiewicz is in his 18th year at Saint Joseph's University serving as an assistant athletic trainer for nine years prior to becoming the head athletic trainer in 2006-07. His primary responsibility is working with the men's basketball team. A 1988 graduate of Springfield College, he earned his master's degree in kinesiology with a concentration in sports medicine from Temple University in 1992. Lukasiewicz has served as a certified athletic trainer at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He lives in Havertown, Pa., with his wife Amy and two sons, Cole and Reed.

Ryan Obsniuk, M.Ed. (SJU '12), ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Ryan Obsniuk, who is in his seventh year as an assistant athletic trainer, returned to SJU in 2009 after serving as an intern in 2007. He completed his undergraduate degree in 2007 from Central Michigan and recently received his master's degree in health administration from SJU. A native of Canton, Mich., he worked at Oakwood Sports Medicine, serving as an outreach athletic trainer to a local high school. Obsniuk resides in Philadelphia. Upper Darby, PA and is currently engaged to Hawk former softball player, Erin Gallagher ’12.

Jessica Witzke, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Jessica Witzke, who served as a student intern in 2011, is in her fourth year at Saint Joseph's as a contract athletic trainer through Main Line Health. The 2011 graduate of Central Michigan University previously served as the head athletic trainer for the McLaren-Bay Region in Michigan, providing coverage for all sports at Essexville Garber High School. She is pursuing her master's of science degree at SJU and currently resides in Philadelphia.

Mitchell Holland, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Mitchell Holland is in his third year at SJU, having returned to the staff returns to the staff after serving as a student intern in 2013. A 2013 graduate of Central Michigan, he hails from White Lake, Mich., and is pursuing his master's of science degree at Saint Joseph's. He currently resides in Philadelphia.
