Box Score

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team lost at Xavier on Wednesday night, falling by a final score of 68-55 at the Cintas Center. Sophomores Ronald Roberts, Jr. paced the Hawks with 14 points apiece, while sophomore Halil Kanacevic added 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The Hawks were without junior Carl Jones, the Atlantic 10's leading scorer, due to a sprained ankle.

Saint Joseph's (12-7, 2-3 Atlantic 10) took a two-point lead at the break as Galloway scored 12 points and Kanacevic chipped in with nine points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in the stanza. The Hawks fell behind by as many as 10 points, trailing 24-14 with 12:31 to play in the half, before storming back to take the lead at halftime.

After the Hawks took an early 6-4 lead on three pointers by C.J. Aiken and Galloway, Xavier (13-5, 4-1 Atlantic 10) scored 20 of the next 28 points to open up its largest lead of the half. Aiken then converted a three-point play to ignite a 12-4 Hawk spurt that culminated in a four-point play for Galloway to cut the deficit to 28-26 with 6:51 to go.

Kanacevic later converted a three-point play of his own with 6:00 on the clock to get the Hawks within one, 30-29. After Jeff Robinson put home a dunk for Xavier, Roberts scored four straight points to give SJU a 33-32 lead with 4:44 to play in the half.

Travis Taylor then sank a pair of free throws and Robinson followed with another dunk, allowing the Musketeers to take a 36-33 lead with 3:51 to go. Roberts then scored four more with a dunk and a turnaround jumper to put the Hawks back on top, 37-36. After Kenny Frease hit one of two free throws for Xavier to tie the score, Daryus Quarles corralled an offensive rebound and laid it in to give the Hawks their two-point cushion.

Saint Joseph's came out firing to start the second half, scoring the first four points on a layup by Aiken and a dunk by Kanacevic to go ahead 43-37 just under a minute into the half. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Musketeers reeled off 14 straight points, including six for Dezmine Wells, to take a lead they would not relinquish at 51-43 with 14:48 remaining.

Roberts stopped the run with a dunk to cut the deficit to six, but Xavier went on a 17-6 run to essentially ice the victory, taking a 68-51 lead with just over six minutes left in the game.

Aiken was fouled on a dunk with 4:43 to play to cut the deficit to 68-53, but missed the ensuing free throw. Both teams then went scoreless until Roberts drained a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to set the final margin.

The Hawks outrebounded the Musketeers 38-28, including a 14-7 edge in offensive rebounds, but that was offset by a season-high 19 turnovers to just eight for Xavier.

Galloway and Roberts led the way with 14 apiece while Kanacevic had 13 and 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. He also added five assists and four steals on the night. Aiken had 10 points and three blocks as well.

Mark Lyons led all scorers with 17 points for Xavier, while Frease had 13 and Wells added 12.

The Hawks return to Philadelphia for a non-conference tilt at Penn on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at The Palestra.
