AMHERST, Mass. - Four Hawks scored in double figures on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team fell at Massachusetts, 80-62, at the Mullins Center. Langston Galloway had 14 points, Carl Jones had 13, and Ronald Roberts, Jr. posted 10, while Halil Kanacevic scored all 12 of his points in the second half.
Tip-off, originally set for 2:00 p.m., was pushed back five hours due to the massive snowstorm that blanketed the northeast United States on Friday and Saturday.
Massachusetts (16-6 overall, 6-3 Atlantic 10) used a 16-2 run to close out the first half and take a 40-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Minutemen jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, but an 11-2 run gave the Hawks a 13-9 lead with 13:50 to go in the half. Chris Wilson hit a pair of three-pointers during the stretch for six of his seven points on the night.
UMass then scored eight straight over the next 1:45 to take a 17-13 lead at the 12:05 mark before Galloway and C.J. Aiken hit consecutive baskets to tie it.
A bucket from Cady Lalanne put UMass back on top but Jones hit his second three of the half to give the Hawks a 20-19 lead at the midpoint of the half. The Minutemen would then score the next five points to take a 24-20 lead with 7:49 to play in the half.
Saint Joseph's (13-9 overall, 4-5 Atlantic 10) answered, tying the game at 24 with 6:07 to go on a pair of baskets by Roberts, but the Minutemen went on their 16-2 run to end the period with a 14-point margin.
Galloway scored the first eight points in the second half to bring the Hawks within six, 40-34, with 17:29 to play. The junior guard drained a three on SJU's first offensive possession and followed that with a pair of free throws and another three to cut further into the lead.
With the Minutemen holding a seven-point lead, Jones hit a three with 14:17 to go to bring Saint Joseph's within four at 45-41. However, UMass scored 14 of the next 20 points to extend its lead to 59-47 with 8:43 to play.
The Hawks had one more push in them, as back-to-back layups by Kanacevic and another three from Jones brought SJU with five, 59-54, at the 6:57 mark. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Massachusetts used an 11-0 run over the next three-plus minutes, capped off by five straight points from Sampson Carter, to take a 70-54 lead and effectively put the game out of reach with 3:39 to play.
Terrell Vinson led all scorers with 18 points for UMass, while Carter chipped in with 16 points and Lalanne led all rebounders with 12.
Kanacevic added seven boards to go with his 12 points, while Roberts had six rebounds and Galloway handed out seven assists.
The Minutemen were hot from the field, finishing with a 51.8% conversion rate for the game. Saint Joseph's shot just 39.2% and had 14 turnovers.
The Hawks return home to Hagan Arena on Wednesday night to host Richmond. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.; the matchup can be seen locally on The Comcast Network and can be heard on SportsRadio 610 WIP.
