BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Langston Galloway converted two free throws with 1.4 seconds to play to lift 10th-seeded Saint Joseph's to a 58-57 win over seventh-seeded Xavier in an Atlantic 10 Tournament Opening Round game at the Barclays Center. The Hawks advance to meet second-seeded VCU in the quarterfinals on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

With Saint Joseph's (18-12) leading 56-55 with 1:44 to play, Xavier's Semaj Christon hit a pair of free throws to give Xavier the 57-56 lead. The Hawks inbounded and brought the ball down the court with Galloway taking it at the top of the key. He drove the lane and was fouled by Christon with 1.4 to play.

Xavier (17-14) had one more try with a length of the court pass, but a layup attempt by Isaiah Philmore was off the mark.

Galloway finished with 14 points to lead the Hawks while Halil Kanacevic and Carl Jones had 11 points each.

The game was close throughout, with 10 ties and 14 lead changes.

With SJU up 33-31, early in the second half, Xavier scored 10 straight points to take a 41-33 lead with 13:35 to go before Galloway ended the streak with a three-pointer. Redford hit a three to make the Xavier run, 13-3, and give the Musketeers a 44-36 edge.

The Hawks fought back with a 12-0 run of their own, with seven points from Kanacevic, including a three-pointer that gave the Hawks the 45-44 lead. A baseline three by Jones extended it to 48-44 with 7:44 to play. A jumper by Kanacevic and alley oop dunk by Aiken pushed the Hawks lead to 52-47.

Brad Redford hit a three to pull Xavier within 52-50, before Roberts scored on a fastbreak with the pass from Wilson to increase SJU's margin to 54-50.

A three-point play by Philmore at 2:31 closed Xavier within, 54-53, and the Musketeers regained the lead, 55-54, on free throws by Justin Martin with 2:04 to play. Saint Joseph's retook the lead on a pair of free throws by Jones at 1:40.

"The players deserve all of the credit. They worked their tails off Tuesday and Wednesday to get ready and said all the appropriate things to each other at timeouts and in the last segment. Being down eight, I thought our halfcourt defense was well done by our team," Said SJU head coach Phil Martelli "I asked them to empty their tanks tonight. So when they put their heads on their pillows, they could say they gave it all they had. And if we're not good enough, we're not good enough. And by an act of God, the ball doesn't go in."

The Hawks ended the first half with a three-point play by Galloway, as he dunked in a pass from Kanacevic and hit the free throw to give them a 28-25 halftime lead. Galloway led the Hawks with nine points in the first half.

Travis Taylor had 16 points for Xavier, with Redford scoring 14 and Christon adding 10.

The Hawks lost in overtime at VCU, 92-86, in January.
