PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's women's soccer team fell to Charlotte, 5-1, Friday evening at Finnesey Field. The Hawks (5-11-1, 2-5-1 Atlantic 10) got a late goal by freshman Mo Hawkins, but couldn't cut the deficit any closer.
Charlotte (14-4-0, 7-1-0 Atlantic 10) took control early and tallied four goals in the opening half to take command of the game. Macky Wingo got the 49ers on the board at 15:08 and added her second goal less than five minutes later to push Charlotte's offense.
Whitney Weinraub gave Charlotte a 3-0 lead at 21:57, with Wingo completing the hat trick at 28:35 off a deflected shot.
The 49ers got a second goal from Weinraub at 51:01 off a penalty kick to extend her team's lead. With the ball in SJU's box, the referee called a foul on SJU goalkeeper Christine Neal for tackling a Charlotte player as she tried to control a rebound. Weinraub took advantage, giving her team a 5-0 lead on the penalty kick.
Hawkins put Saint Joseph's on the board at 89:19 as she scored off a pass from classmate Morgan Duffy. Hawkins too a pass and drove to the right side of the Charlotte box and blasted the ball into the upper netting for the goal.
For the game, Charlotte finished with a 20-17 edge in shots, with Neal making a game-high 10 saves.
Saint Joseph's caps the regular season this Sunday against Saint Louis at 1 p.m.
