DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Carl Jones had 12 points and junior C.J. Aiken scored 11 but the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team could not overcome a 23-point night from Dayton's Kevin Dillard as the Hawks fell to the Flyers, 60-54, at the University of Dayton Arena on Wednesday night.

Saint Joseph's (13-8 overall, 4-4 Atlantic 10) had a one-point lead, 27-26, at halftime. After the Flyers tied the game at 33 on a layup by Dyshawn Pierre, Aiken put the Hawks back on top with a scintillating dunk, completing a three-point play to give SJU a 36-33 lead with 16:08 to go.

That keyed a 10-2 Saint Joseph's run that gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the night, 43-36, on another dunk by Aiken with 12:11 remaining.

From there, Dayton (13-9 overall, 3-5 Atlantic 10) scored the next five points, keeping the Hawks off the board for nearly six minutes until a layup by Ronald Roberts, Jr., extended the lead to 45-41 at the 6:34 mark.

However, back-to-back three-pointers by Devin Oliver and Dillard put the Flyers on top, 47-45, with 5:39 to play. A pair of free throws by Langston Galloway tied the game before a Josh Benson layup gave UD a 49-47 lead with 4:38 to go.

Jones followed with a three-pointer to put SJU on top by a point, but Benson responded to make it a 51-50 lead for Dayton with 4:08 to play. Just over a minute later, Galloway hit a mid-range jumper to put the Hawks on top, 52-51, with 2:41 left in the game.

It was all Dillard from that point forward as the UD guard hit a three-pointer and a long two to give Dayton a four-point advantage, 56-52, with 1:24 to go. Chris Wilson hit a pair of free throws to get the Hawks back within two, but Dillard hit four free throws in the final half-minute to salt away the victory.

It was a back-and-forth first half as neither team led by more than five points. A three-pointer by Vee Sanford gave Dayton a 10-6 lead with 14:21 to play, but a dunk by Aiken and a three from Galloway put the Hawks on top, 11-10, at the 13:22 mark.

The Flyers responded with an 8-2 run to go ahead, 18-13, with 9:35 to go. The Hawks followed with a 7-0 spurt of their own as Halil Kanacevic hit a pair of free throws, Aiken threw down a dunk, and Wilson hit a three to give SJU a 20-18 lead with 6:24 to go in the half. The teams then traded baskets for the remainder of the frame. Dillard led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Pierre was also in double figures for the Flyers with 10 points. Oliver had a game-high 12 rebounds, while Kanacevic had nine boards to lead Saint Joseph's.

The Hawks are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Massachusetts. Tip-off at the Mullins Center is set for 2:00 p.m.; the game can be seen nationally on ESPN2 and can be heard on SportsRadio 610 WIP.
