Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Mark Lyons had 24 points on 10-for-14 shooting to lead 24th-ranked Xavier (19-6; 10-1) to a 74-54 win over Saint Joseph's at Hagan Arena. Kenny Frease added 17 points and 10 rebounds while Tu Holloway scored 14.

Idris Hilliard led SJU (7-18; 2-9 A-10) with 13 points with Langston Galloway scoring 11.

Saint Joseph's started out strong and with senior Idris Hilliard scoring 10 points in the first 11 minutes, the Hawks led by as many as five points. But the final four minutes would change the game as Xavier outscored the Hawks, 13-2, during that span to take a 34-27 lead at halftime. A three-pointer by Lyons and three-point play by Kenny Frease gave Xavier a 31-25 lead and then Tu Holloway scored his only points of the half when he converted three free throws with a second remaining.

Xavier built up a 13-point lead, 40-27, in the first few minutes of the second half. The Hawks came as close as 45-37 at 13:31, but the Musketeers would score six straight to own a 51-37 lead with 10:14 to play. Xavier never let the lead get smaller than 16 points, but built it up to 21, 70-48, on free throws by Holloway with 2:04 to play.

Saint Joseph's shot just 24 percent in the second half, and was just 2-for-9 from three-point range.

The crowd witnessed an emotional moment at the start of the game as head coach Phil Martelli was accompanied onto the court by 16-year old Lenny Martelli (no relation), who had been paralyzed from a snowboarding accident just a year ago. Lenny's family had contacted the coach to ask him to offer encouragement during Lenny's rehabilitation. Coach Martelli promised Lenny that when he got well, he could walk out onto the court before a Hawks' game.

The Hawks will travel crosstown on Sunday to meet rival Temple at the Liacouras Center. Game time is 4 p.m.
