PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's baseball team suffered its second late-inning defeat in as many days as the Hawks fell to Norfolk State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. SJU took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning before succumbing to a Spartan rally. NSU's Ernie Banks (1-0) earned the victory, while Mark Imbo (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks.

Freshman starter Randall Mower pitched three innings for Saint Joseph's (0-2), conceding to runs to the Norfolk State (2-2) bats. The Hawks tied the game with one out in the top of the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore Ben Wendle and junior Chris Cashman. SJU took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out double by senior Mike Gentile.

In the bottom on the ninth, Jerrod Farley singled off of Imbo to lead off the frame. After a sacrifice bunt, Farley advanced to third on a Charles Lalane single. He was then tagged out on a fielder's choice, leaving first and second with two out. A hit batsman loaded the bases before Banks walked to force in the tying run. Pinch-hitter Jose Torres then chopped a slow-roller up the third-base line. Hawk third baseman Michael Gers mishandled the grounder, allowing the winning run to score.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for noon.
