Saint Joseph’s Varsity 4 captured a gold medal In the Atlantic 10 Women’s Rowing Championship at Cooper River, as the Hawks finished fifth in the team standings.

Rhode Island won the team championship with 51 points while UMass was the runner-up with 46. Saint Joseph’s had 15 points but is the only other school besides URI and UMass to win an A-10 Championship in the 20-year history of the event as the Hawks earned the title in 2011.

Senior Maria Biancaniello (Varsity 8) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team for the second year in a row. Classmate Caroline Strauss (Second Varsity 8) was chosen to the All-Conference Second Team.

The Varsity 4 captured the title, clocking a 7:45.01 to finish ahead of UMass and earn SJU’s first gold in that event since 2006. It was also Saint Joseph’s first A-10 gold medal since 2010 (Quad). The champion V4 consisted of: c- Caitlin Kennedy; 4- Fiona McKee; 3- Demi Simms; 2-Kiernan Loue; 1- Sam Haines

“Overall it was a good day for us. We rowed above our seeds. Since we were seeded low, we did much better. All the boats advanced to the Grand Finals, which is a big deal. And we had a lot of speed this week and we showed it today. We’re still a little off base but we’ve got Dad Vail next and we’ll pick up some seconds this week,” said coach Gerry Quinlan.

“The Varsity 4 has been good all year. They jelled together really well. The lineup has changed as all the boats have but they compete every day in practice against the eights and they fight and battle and try to beat them. I think that fight has given them great race execution.”

SJU’s Varsity 8 finished fifth as Rhode Island earned the win. The lineup was: c- Jess Crosby; 8- Anne Monte; 7- Maria Biancaniello; 6- Cailin McCully; 5- Fiona Devine; 4- Dom Milillo; 3- Corinne O’Neill; 2- Shane Devine; 1- Natalie Simms

The Third Varsity 8 took second in the non-scoring event, placing behind George Washington. The Hawks’ lineup was: c-Sarah Vest; 8- Sam O’Connell; 7- Kate LaCasse; 6- Steph Senatore; 5- Cassie Francis; 4- Jenna Koch; 3- Alyssa Vanni; 2- Nia Brumme; 1- Theresa Crosby

The Second Varsity 8 was sixth in the race won by URI. The lineup was: c- Shannon Mulgrew; 8- Brianna Stone; 7- Rose Tavianini; 6- Olivia Sullivan; 5- Allie Howell; 4- Caroline Strauss; 3- Jennifer Raphaelson; 2- Katherine Robb; 1- Kerri Roman
