ELKTON, Md. - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team fell to Delaware in its first dual match of the season, 7-0, on Sunday at Elkton Indoor Tennis.

Opening with doubles play, Delaware earned the match's first point with wins at all three flights.

Moving to singles, the youthful Hawks battled, but the veteran Blue Hens proved too much. Amanda Nava challenegd at the top flight, but fell 6-4, 6-3, while Laura Gomez had a strong showing at the third flight before falling 7-5, 6-2.

"A tough start for our young squad against a more match-fit, tough team," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "Good individual performances and some quality tennis provided a tougher match than the scores indicated. The match fit Delaware team was tougher on the critical game points. We wil grow as we get more matches under our belt."

Saint Joseph's (0-1) returns to action on Friday when it hosts U.C. Irvine at the Springton Tennis Club at 7:30 p.m.
