PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Shooting 52.9 percent from the field and leading throughout, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team downed Duquesne, 69-50, Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Paced by 17 points apiece from juniors Alyssa Monaghan and Sarah Veilleux, the Hawks avenged a January loss to the Dukes to improve to 7-5 in the Atlantic 10 and 12-12 overall.

After trading baskets to start, Saint Joseph's went on a 9-0 run to open an 11-2 edge on layup by senior Chelsea Woods.

Following back-to-back baskets by the Dukes, the Hawks responded with a 10-0 spurt to take a 21-6 lead on a three-pointer by Monaghan at 2:17.

Saint Joseph's continued to pull away in the second quarter as it opened a 39-20 lead on a layup by junior Kristalyn Baisden with 2:23 to go.

Duquesne (20-5, 10-2 A-10) opened the third quarter with a little momentum as it quickly cut the deficit to 11, 42-31, on a three-pointer by Kadri-Ann Lass 1:05 into the period.

Monaghan answered back with a three-pointer to spark an 11-0 run that saw the Hawks take a 53-31 advantage on a layup by graduate student Amanda Fioravanti at 5:58.

The Dukes would come no closer than 16 from there as Saint Joseph's handed Duquesne its first home loss of the season.

For the game, the Hawks shot 52.9 percent from the field (27-of-51), 44.4 percent from three-point range (8-of-18) and hit 7-of-9 from the foul line. Taking advantage of its size, SJU outscored Duquesne 32-12 in the paint and scored 18 fast-break points.

Individually, Monaghan added six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Veilleux grabbed six rebounds. Senior Adashia Franklyn chipped in with 11 points and a game-high four blocks, while Fioravanti finished with 10 points.

At the other end, Duquesne was held to 31 percent shooting (18-of-58) as it was held to a season-low 50 points. Chassidy Omogrosso led two Dukes in double figures with 11 points.

The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday at Davidson at 7 p.m.
