PHILADELPHIA (11/24/03) - Saint Joseph's point guard Jameer Nelson (Chester, Pa.) has been named the Player of the Week in both the Atlantic 10 and the Philadelphia Big 5 for the first week of the season. Nelson had 20 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds to lead the then-17th-ranked Hawks to a 73-66 win over then-#10 Gonzaga in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden. The 5-11 senior also had two steals and went 7-for-8 from the foul line. It marks the sixth career A-10 Player of the Week award for Nelson, who is a consensus preseason first-team All-American. The senior co-captain is also a candidate for the Wooden Award and the Naismith Award, given to the top player in the country. Last week, Nelson was also recognized as the National Player of the Week by ESPN.com while the Hawks were the Team of the Week. The Hawks moved up to 13th in the Associated Press poll and return to action on Tuesday, November 25 at Boston University.
