BETHLEHEM, PA - A five-run sixth inning broke open a close game as Lehigh (23-23) defeated Saint Joseph's (15-27) in mid-week baseball action 12-3 at the baseball field on Goodman Campus. Senior Greg Mason was 2-for-4 at the plate for SJU.
The Hawks' Joel Grimshaw and Lehigh's Joe Raniszewski engaged in a pitcher's duel over the first couple of innings, and the game remained scoreless into the bottom of the third, when the Mountain Hawks struck for a pair of runs. They then added single tallies in the fourth and fifth to build a 4-0 lead.
The Crimson and Gray got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth inning, but in the home half of the sixth the Mountain Hawks scored five times off SJU reliever freshman Justin Trudell to put the game out of reach. Lehigh registered five hits in the frame, and all five runs came with two outs in the inning.
The Brown and White added a pair of runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth against Brian Anecharico.
Raniszewski (2-1) allowed only one infield hit and struck out three over four innings of work to pick up the win. Grimshaw (1-2) suffered the setback surrendering four runs and seven hits over five innings.
SJU travels to Villanova on Wednesday afternoon.
