PHILADELPHIA, PA, (04/17/01) - A two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth by the St. Joseph's baseball team (13-16-1) forced extra innings, but Villanova (18-17-1) pushed home a single run in the eleventh to defeat the Hawks in the quarterfinals of the Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium. Senior Mike DeVincentis, the 2000 Liberty Bell co-MVP, keyed the SJU comeback by going 3-6 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. SJU trailed by a pair of runs in the game twice, but rallied to knot the contest each time. Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth doubles by DeVincentis and Tim Gunn brought SJU within one run. The Hawks then sent Chris McLaughlin to pinch run for Gunn. Next up, Pace Bradshaw slapped a hit behind the second base bag. The Wildcat second baseman ranged deep behind the bag and fired a ball into the dirt at first base. When the ball got away from the first baseman McLaughlin raced home to score the tying run. The game remained tied at 4-4 until the eleventh inning. In that inning, VU loaded the bases, the winning run scored when Jim Boylan hit a batter with the bases still juiced. The Hawks used two pitchers in the game, Eric Wyatt who started the game and Boylan, who threw well in relief. Wyatt went five innings and allowed only 2 runs. Boylan surrendered three runs over the final six innings and suffered the defeat (2-5). In addition to DeVincentis, Wyatt and Kevin Kirkby had two hits each for the Hawks. Gunn finished the game with 10 putouts and tied Jason Hamilton's school record for career putouts with 955. A busy week continues for the Hawks tomorrow, as SJU hosts Rider at 3:00 PM. On Friday they visit crosstown rival La Salle in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader.
