STETSON KNOCKS OFF SAINT JOSEPH'S, 8-5

DELAND, FLA (2/20/04) - Stetson defeated visiting Saint Joseph's (0-4) 8-5 Friday night at Melching Field. Stetson produced enough offense to overcome five errors as the Hatters (3-1) won the opening game of the three-game series. Saint Joseph's (0-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single to right by Bill McCollum. The Hatters jumped into the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. The teams traded single runs in the fifth before the Hatters broke the game open with three runs in the sixth. The Hawks answered with three runs in the seventh but would pull no closer. Jake Iampietro had three hits and McCollum collected three RBI for the Hawks. Cy McCuen (2-0) fanned six through six innings to earn his second victory of the season. Junior Al Braum (0-2) suffered the loss. Sunday's series finale has been changed to a 12:05 start. Game two Saturday will begin at 2 p.m. as scheduled.
