NORRISTOWN, PA (4/05/04) - Rallying for six runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the Saint Joseph's baseball team (6-26, 1-5 A-10) topped Dayton (12-14, 2-4 A-10), 9-5, to salvage the final game of a three game Atlantic 10 series at Latshaw-McCarthy FIeld. SJU tallied a single run in the first inning when senior Jason Tarewicz scored on a groundball, but Dayton tallied twice in the third to go on top 2-1. Chad Liter and Patrick Flynn each drove home runs for UD. The Hawks reclaimed the lead in the fifth, 3-2, tallying a pair of runs. The lead stood for the Hawks until the seventh when Dayton scored three runs to stake itself a 5-3 advantage. A two run single by Tom Beechem was the key blow for the Flyers. The Crimson and Gray responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the seventh to knot the game at 5-5. After the Flyers failed to score in the top of the eighth, SJU erupted for four runs in the home half of the frame to take the lead for good. UD starter Craig Stammen who had pitched seven strong innings allowed a leadoff single to Greg Mason and then was replaced by Kyle Lindsay. Jake Iampietro followed with a sacrifice bunt back to Lindsay, but he bobbled the ball allowing both runners to reach. After a strikeout, a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third with one out. An intentional walk loaded the bases and an unintentional walk to Tarewicz forced home the lead run. A two-run single by McCollum brought home two more runs and a sacrifice fly drove home the final tally. Both team's starters pitched into the eighth inning. Junior Al Bruan went 7.1 for SJU, allowing five runs on 11 hits, but got the no decision. Sophomore Jason Volker (2-4) gave up just one hit over the final 1.2 innings to earn the win in relief.
