PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's and Temple went down to the wire in another Atlantic 10 and Big 5 classic, but the 21st-ranked Owls emerged with the 75-67 overtime victory at the Palestra.
The loss drops the Hawks to 9-18 (3-10 A-10) while Temple improves to 22-5 (10-2). SJU is 1-2 in the Big 5 while Temple is 3-0.
Saint Joseph's senior Garrett Williamson made a twisting layup with 5.7 seconds remaining in the second half to put the Hawks on top by two, but a last-second basket by Temple's Ramone Moore the game into overtime, 59-59.
The Owls outscored the Hawks, 16-8, in the extra period, shooting 4-of-5 from the field and led by five points from Ryan Brooks.
With 1:07 to go in regulation and the Owls ahead by one, 55-54, SJU sophomore Chris Prescott drained a three from the corner to give the Hawks a two-point edge with 37.6 seconds remaining. Ryan Brooks answered back for Temple with a jumper at :25 to tie the score at 57-57.
In a low-scoring first half, Temple led by as much as 10-2 early on, but the Hawks tied it, 14-14, on a 3-pointer by Williamson. Temple would go on to lead at halftime, 29-23, as the Owls shot 43.8 percent, although they went 0-for-7 from 3-point range.
The second half saw nine times and nine lead changes as the Hawks shot 45.5 percent from the field.
Moore led four Owls in double figures with 24 points while Lavoy Allen had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Saint Joseph's goes back on the road to face Charlotte on Wednesday, February 24.
