CAMDEN, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped the opener of its final Atlantic 10 series of the season on Thursday afternoon, falling by the score of 18-1. Ryan McDonald led the Hawks with two hits and a run scored.
Xavier (23-30 overall, 16-9 Atlantic 10) jumped ahead in the first, scoring three runs on an RBI single through the right side by Ben Thomas, a bases-loaded steal of home by Phil Bauer, and a passed ball.
Saint Joseph's (18-27 overall, 13-12 Atlantic 10) had an opportunity to get on the board in the bottom of the second with runners on second and third and one out, but XU starter Tommy Shirley recorded a strikeout and a groundout to keep SJU at bay.
An infield single by Drew Schmidt put Xavier on top 4-0 in the second. In the third, the Musketeers scored three runs on a bases-loaded walk by Neil Lindgren, a groundout by Patrick Paligraf, and a single by John McCambridge.
Zac Richard added a solo home run in the fourth to push the Xavier lead to 8-0. The Musketeers would add two in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 14-0 lead.
SJU broke through and tacked a run on the board in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Palmer.
Neil Lindgren led off the eighth for Xavier with a home run off the left field foul pole and the Musketeers would tack on two more in the frame and one in the ninth to close the scoring.
Before Friday's game, the squad's 12 departing seniors will be honored in a brief ceremony.
