RADNOR, PA - Saint Joseph's basketball coach Phil Martelli will deliver the Commencement address to 430 graduates at Cabrini College on Sunday, May 21. Martelli will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in recognition of his extraordinary career and service to the community.
It is the second honorary degree conferred on the Hawks' coach in the past three years. In May, 2004 he received an honorary doctorate in public service from his alma mater, Widener University.
Martelli just completed his 11th season as head coach of the Hawks and has owns a 222-125 record. He's guided the Hawks to eight postseason appearances in the 11 years, including bids in the past six consecutive seasons. Martelli has been named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year four times in his career and was the consensus National Coach of the Year in 2004.
Martelli is very active in the community and is one of the leaders of the Philadelphia chapter of Coaches vs. Cancer, which has become one of the top nation's fundraising groups for that organization. Over the past few years, he has been honored by the March of Dimes, the National Adoption Center and the Philadelphia Archdiocese CYO for his service.
Martelli's sister, Lisa (Martelli) Haney, graduated from Cabrini in 1991.
Cabrini's Commencement will begin at 10 a.m. on May 21 under a tent on the College's Cavalier Athletic Field.
