PHILADELPHIA - Pat Calathes had 17 points and Darrin Govens scored 16 as Saint Joseph's (15-10; 7-4 A-10) defeated George Washington (15-8; 6-5 A-10), 62-56, at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse in a key Atlantic 10 matchup.
Calathes made his first three foul shots of the game to run his consecutive streak to 38, breaking the school record of 37 set by Delonte West in 2003-04. Calathes missed one at 5:05, which was his first miss since January 13.
The game was tied nine times and saw eight lead changes, but the Hawks broke a 52-52 tie at 5:03 by scoring seven straight points, sparked by a 3-pointer from Govens at 4:35.
After GW pulled within 59-56 at 2:06, Garrett Williamson had big defensive rebounds on consecutive Colonial possessions. Govens then hit two free throws at :57 and Calathes added the final point with a free throw at :25.
Ahmad Nivins had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds, while the Hawks outdistanced GW on the boards, 35-27.
Govens, who made his second consecutive start, hit 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
The Hawks go on their first road trip in three weeks visiting St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Feb. 17.
