PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's Dwayne Jones has been named the Player of the Week in both the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5 for Jan. 16 after leading the Hawks to two conference wins last week, while helping them extend their winning streak to four games.
Jones, a 6-11 center from Chester, PA, recorded a pair of double-doubles, while averaging 14.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in the two games. He shot 8-for-15 (.533) from the field and 13-for-20 (.650) from the foul line in earning the first Player of the Week award of his career.
In the Hawks' 59-52 win over Massachusetts on Jan. 12, Jones posted game highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds, while hitting a career-high 10-of-14 from the foul line. He followed that with an 11-point, 13-rebound, two-block effort in Saint Joseph's 73-38 win over La Salle on Jan. 15.
Jones is the leading rebounder and shot blocker in the Atlantic 10, with averages of 10.8 and 2.7, respectively. The junior is also averaging 11.3 points per game and has recorded a double-double seven times this year.
Jones becomes the first Hawk to earn one of the conference's weekly honors this season. By this time last year, Jameer Nelson had already won the award five times and Delonte West had earned it once.
The Hawks (7-6; 4-0) visit Dayton on Wednesday, January 19, looking to extend their 21-game Atlantic 10 winning streak.
