MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's baseball team lost a tough one on Friday afternoon, falling by a 4-3 score to Bucknell in the first of a four-game weekend set on the Maguire Campus. Junior Kyle Mullen started for the Hawks, tossing seven strong innings, while sophomores Kevin Kratochwill and Tommy Cunningham had two hits and two runs scored, respectively.
Bucknell (10-8) scored first, posting a pair of runs in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by Mark Figgie and a single by Bob Donato.
The Bison nosed ahead again in the fourth after Robb Scott tripled and came in to score on a double by Donato.
The Hawks equalized once again in the bottom of the frame. Cunningham and Cirillo started the fourth off with walks before Renner sacrificed them to second and third, setting up Kratochwill for a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The tie remained until the eighth inning when three straight two-out singles scored pinch runner Matt Busch with what turned out to be the winning run.
Renner almost tied things up in the bottom of the ninth, but his two-out drive to left was caught on the warning track.
Dan Weigel (5-1) got the win for Bucknell, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven and two-thirds innings. Alex Cillo earned his fourth save of the year, retiring all four batters he faced, while Daniel Thorpe (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
Mullen finished his outing with seven innings pitched and three runs allowed on nine hits against the Bison, who rank eighth in Division I in team batting average. He also fanned four without walking a batter, retiring seven in a row in the middle innings.
The teams will return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for noon.
