NEWARK, Del. - Saint Joseph's saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Hawks lost to Delaware, 16-4, in non-conference baseball action at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark,
Saint Joseph's (8-11-1) took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the second inning by Mike Boyland.
Delaware (13-7) jumped ahead in the bottom half of the frame on a single and a bases-loaded walk. The Blue Hens scored two more in the third, one more in the fourth, and three more in the sixth to open up a seven-run lead.
The Hawks pushed two across in the top of the seventh as David Valesente hit a two-run home run, his third of the season, over the left field wall.
UD got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run before putting the game out of reach with a seven-run explosion in the bottom of the eighth.
The Hawks scored a run in the top of the ninth when Dewey Oriente joined the home run parade with a solo shot to left.
Valesente finished the game with three hits, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Oriente added a pair of hits on the day.
Bases on balls were once again an issue as Saint Joseph's pitchers allowed 12 free passes to Delaware hitters, leading to eight UD runs.
