The Rivalry: A Look at Some of the Most Memorable Saint Joseph's - Villanova Games

PHILADELPHIA - Over its 100 years of existence, Saint Joseph's men's basketball team has had arguably no bigger rival than Villanova. The Saint Joseph's - Villanova rivalry is one of the most intense in college basketball as just 6.4 miles separates the two Big 5 schools which are rich in basketball tradition.

As the Hawks and Wildcats meet for the 67th time Wednesday evening at the Palestra, here is a look at some of the most memorable games in the series history:
• Feb. 8, `08; SJU 77- VU 55: The Hawks snap their three-game losing streak against Villanova before a capacity and pro-SJU crowd at The Palestra.
• Feb. 7, `06; #4 VU 71- SJU 58: For only the fourth time in Big 5 history, two 3-0 teams play for the city title. SJU couldn't sustain its play from the first 20 minutes as VU comes on strong in the second half to win in the sold-out Palestra in the game that marks the 50th anniversary of the Big 5.
• Feb. 2, `04; #3 SJU 74- VU 67: Jameer Nelson and Delonte West combine for 44 points to lead the 3rd-ranked Hawks to their 19th straight win in the standing-room-only Pavilion.
• Feb. 3, `03: SJU 92-75: Hawks roll to a 40-9 lead en route to the win.
• Dec. 11, `00; VU 78- SJU 75: Michael Bradley has 20 pts, 10 rebs.
• Dec. 18, `94; SJU 60- VU 57: Dmitri Domani hits two late free throws to cap a Hawks' comeback.
• Dec. 8, `90; VU 83- SJU 82: Marc Dowdell hits two free throws at :05 and the Hawks' Richard Stewart makes a layup instead of taking a 3-pointer.
• Dec. 12, `87: SJU 53- VU 52: Ivan "Pick" Brown, who shoots 2-for-15 in the game, rebounds a missed free throw with :08 to go and drives upcourt, sinking a bank shot at the buzzer.
• Feb. 19, `87; VU 88- SJU 87: Double OT classic ending with missed shots by the Hawks' Bruiser Flint and Jack Concannon.
• Feb. 19, `85; VU 47- SJU 44: Controversial ending as Dwayne McClain hits a baseline jumper and free throw with :02 left.
• Jan. 31, `82: SJU 84-VU 64: Bryan Warrick scores 23 points while both teams are NCAA-bound.
• Feb. 19, `77; VU 92- SJU 78: `Nova wins the first Big 5 game played away from the Palestra (at the Spectrum).
• Jan. 27, `73: VU 79, SJU 72: Double OT game where Ed Hastings and Tom Inglesby combined for 43 points.
• Feb. 20, `71: VU 63- SJU 55: Classic duel between Mike Bantom and Howard Porter.
• Jan. 16, `66: SJU 71- VU 69: In one of the most memorable shots in Hawk history, Steve Donches, who entered the game in the final minutes, hits the game-winning jumper at the buzzer.
• Feb. 20, `65: SJU 69- VU 61: A bomb scare overshadows the game.
• Jan. 12, `63: VU 63- SJU 61: Eric Erickson's layup at :04 wins it in OT.
• Mar. 3, `62: VU 66- SJU 59: Hubie White had 23 pts and 17 rebs.
• Feb. 12, `58: SJU 86- VU 82: Trailing 52-35, the Hawks rally to win in OT.
• Dec. 14, `55: SJU 83- VU 70: First-ever Big 5 game in front of 2,636 fans where Al Juliana came off the bench to score 22 points.
