COLUMBUS, OH - The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team visits Ohio State for a New Year's Eve tilt on Friday evening at 6 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN Plus as part of its Fullcourt package. The SJU-OSU contest will also be broadcast via the Saint Joseph's Sports Network on WPEN-Radio (950 AM).
It will be Saint Joseph's third New Year's Eve game in the last four years, with the other two games being the classic battles with Gonzaga. In the program's history, the Hawks are 2-2 on the final day of the year. SJU scored an overtime victory at Gonzaga in 2002, but lost to the Zags in the Fieldhouse in 2001. In 1996, the Hawks defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay to win that school's tournament, and in 1961, the Hawks lost to Seton Hall in the ECAC Holiday Festival in New York City.
The 3-5 Hawks are looking to break a three-game losing streak after suffering a rare home loss on Tuesday evening to Bucknell. That defeat ended a 12-game winning streak at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
SJU used a different look on Tuesday with junior Dave Mallon replacing senior John Bryant in the starting lineup. Senior Pat Carroll scored a season-high 21 points in the game while Chet Stachitas, who is still battling an ankle injury, tallied 14.
With the New Year comes Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Hawks open defense of their A-10 East regular season crown on Wednesday, January 5 at Fordham. Saint Joseph's is looking to become only the second team in conference history to win five consecutive regular-season crowns.
