PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team took to the court with the first official practice of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks open the 2005-06 season on November 18 at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse against Lafayette.

The Hawks return three starters - Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas - from last year's squad which went 24-12 and reached the championship game of the NIT. The three seniors, who were voted as captains by their teammates, have totalled 77 wins in their careers thus far.

Phil Martelli, now in his 11th season, has guided the Hawks to an impressive 122-40 mark over the past five seasons. That stretch has included five straight Atlantic 10 regular season titles and five consecutive postseason appearances. The Hawks will be looking to earn their sixth A-10 title this year to set a new conference record.

SJU will make a school-record eight appearances on national television this season, with the first broadcast being the Jimmy V Classic against Kansas on December 6.

Fans can get their first look at the Hawks on Friday, October 21 in the annual "Midnight Madness". The event runs from 8 to 10 p.m. at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and will be highlighted by a Crimson vs. Gray intra-squad scrimmage. Admission is free.
