PHILADELPHIA - An enthusiastic crowd, mostly of Saint Joseph's students, greeted the SJU men's and women's basketball teams on Friday evening at Midnight Madness at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.

The students participated in contests and promotions until 10 p.m. when the Fieldhouse lights went out for the introductions of both teams.

Coach Cindy Griffin and the '06-07 women's squad was introduced to the crowd followed by the men's team.

Phil Martelli praised the crowd for their support and explained why the event was held this weekend, saying, "I told people that this is the best student body in the nation and we waited for them to come back to campus." The University had been on Fall Break until this past Thursday.

He also stated, "These guys may be young, but there's one thing that only you know. They've got big hearts and are going to play hard for you all year."

The men's team held a spirited three-period intra-squad scrimmage with Ahmad Nivins scoring 10 points for the Crimson team, and Jawan Carter scoring nine points and handing out four assists for the Gray squad.

Local radio personalities Rhea Hughes and Anthony Gargano made appearances at the event, along with Shaun Young of the Philadelphia Eagles Fan Section.

Martelli closed the evening thanking the fans and saying, "You've never, ever let us down and we promise to do the same for you 35 nights this year."
