NEWPORT NEWS, Va./PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's senior Dewey Oriente was chosen as both the Atlantic 10 Baseball Co-Player of the Week and the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player of the Week. The conference award was announced on Monday, while the voting for the Big 5 award occurred on Tuesday.
Aaron Dunsmore of Dayton shared the Atlantic 10 award with Oriente, while Villanova's Brian Streilein was named Big 5 Pitcher of the Week as well.
Oriente helped power the Hawks to a 3-1 record from April 5-11, posting a .529 batting average with eight runs scored and 10 RBI. He also slammed three home runs in the weekend series at Duquesne, his first roundtrippers of the season. Oriente added a pair of triples, a double, and a 1.353 slugging percentage to his resume for the week.
In the 6-1 win over Lafayette, it was Oriente's two-run triple in the third inning that put the Hawks ahead to stay. He hit his first home run of the year in Friday's loss, and came back with two longballs for five RBI in his first two at bats as the Hawks cruised to a 9-2 win over the Dukes on Sunday, clinching their third straight conference series.
Saint Joseph's sits at 11-14 overall and 6-3 in the Atlantic 10, just one game behind conference leaders Charlotte and George Washington. SJU has won all three of its A-10 series so far this season, marking the first time the Hawks have posted three consecutive series wins since 1995.
The Hawks return to the diamond for midweek games at Temple on Tuesday and at Delaware on Wednesday.
