ST. LOUIS, MO - Two runs in the top of the seventh inning propelled Saint Joseph's to a 3-2 win over the Saint Louis Billikens on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 baseball action. Freshman David Valesente's RBI single put the Hawks ahead to stay, and junior lefthander Mark Imbo held off the Billikens to earn his second win of the season. Valesente finished the day with two hits and two RBIs.
Saint Joseph's (8-34, 5-16 Atlantic 10) got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior Tim Smith drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Ken Pustizzi. Two batters later, Valesente singled to bring Smith home with the game's first run.
The lead disappeared in the fourth as Saint Louis (13-34, 9-11 Atlantic 10) scored two in the frame. A two-out double by Ziggy Moore and a single by Ryan Crespi put SLU up 2-1 until SJU came back with two in the seventh.
With one out in the inning, Smith drew his team-leading 15th walk of the season. Pustizzi followed with a double down the line in right to put runners on second and third. Senior Adriano Petrutz tied the game with an RBI groundout, advancing Pustizzi to third and scoring Smith. Valesente then singled through the right side of the infield to plate Pustizzi and give SJU the lead.
Freshman starter Mark Dolaghan worked 5.1 innings on Sunday, allowing two runs while scattering seven hits. Dolaghan struck out two and walked two. Imbo came into the game in the sixth inning after a one-out double, but worked his way out of trouble to keep the Billikens off the board. He worked 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two base runners on an error and a walk while striking out one to improve to 2-4. SLU's Dave Sever took the loss and is now 4-6 on the year.
SJU returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, May 8, as the Hawks will head to New Jersey to take on the Rider Broncs. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
