PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore outfielder Ben Wendle was named the Big 5 Baseball Player of the Week for April 16. It is the first Big 5 honor for Wendle, and the second of the season for SJU. Villanova's Jordan Ellis received Pitcher of the Week honors.
Wendle had a stellar week at the plate for the Hawks. He recorded eight hits in 15 at-bats, including three doubles and a homerun. Wendle recorded multiple hits in three of Saint Joseph's four games last week, including a 5-for-8 performance in Saturday's doubleheader split with La Salle. He also drove in six runs, with five of them coming in the 14-1 win over the Explorers on Saturday, adding two runs of his own.
Wendle joins senior first baseman Mike Gentile as the only Hawks to earn Big 5 honors in 2007. Gentile won the award on March 26th.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday, April 18, when the Hawks will host the NJIT Highlanders at Latshaw-McCarthy Field in Norristown. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
