BOXSCORE2 NORRISTOWN, PA (4/03/04) - Dayton (12-13, 2-3 A-10) used strong pitching in game one and timely hitting in game two to sweep an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader from Saint Joseph's (5-26, 0-5 A-10) at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. UD took the first game 3-0 and then downed the Hawks 11-6 in game two. Freshman Brian Schappert had four hits, two in each game, for the Crimson and Gray. In game one, SJU freshman Adriano Petrutz (2-2) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits, with five strikeouts, but suffered the loss as the Hawks could muster just four hits off the Flyer tandem of Jerry Blevins and Craig Stammen in the 3-0 Dayton win. Blevins (4-1) went 5.2 innings surrendering two hits and stiking out six to earn the win. Stammen came in and bailed UD out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth and then tossed a scoreless seventh to earn his fourth save. The Flyers tallied single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Dayton stranded seven runners, the Hawks left nine on base. UD's Tom Beechem was 2-3 and scored a couple of runs, Patrick FLynn was 2-3 with two RBI. Schappert added a pair of hits for the Hawks. In the nightcap, Dayton's Drew Chesebro (1-2) went the distance allowing six runs on nine hits to collect the 11-6 win. SJU's Ryan Hoagey (1-3) suffered the loss giving up eight runs on nine hits as the Hawks fell by an 11-6 count. UD took the early lead scoring three times in the second inning, but SJU responded with four runs in the third to take the lead. A four run fifth allowed the Flyers to go back on top, although SJU tallied twice in the sixth to get within one at 7-6. A four run seventh inning by UD broke the game open. Flynn was 3-4 in game two, Nick Bohnenstiehl also had three hits. Aaron Hepner hit a two run homer in the fifth for Dayton. Freshman Mike Gentile, junior Joe DiNubile and Schappert each had two hits for the Hawks. The two teams will complete their three game weekend series with a single nine inning game on Sunday at noon.
