WILMINGTON, N.C. - Holy Cross scored 10 times in the seventh and eighth innings on Monday afternoon as the Crusaders dealt the Saint Joseph's baseball team a 16-3 defeat on a cold and windy day at Brooks Field in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Holy Cross (2-3) nosed ahead in the fourth. With one out and runners on second and third, Stephen Wadsworth grounded out to short, scoring Jack Laurendeau. Steven Tkowski followed one batter later with a single to center to score Eric Oxford with the go-ahead run.
The Crusaders added to the lead in the top of the fifth. An error by Taylor with no one out and runners on second and third allowed Alex Maldonado to score. A walk then loaded the bases, but a pair of fly balls gave the Hawks a light at the end of the tunnel. However, Patrick Puentes cleared the bases with a triple to right to put HC ahead, 6-1.
A Chris Hueth single up the middle with two out in the bottom of the frame scored Taylor to cut the deficit to four.
Unfortunately, that would be all for the Crimson and Gray until the bottom of the ninth. In the meantime, the Crusaders tacked on sixth in the seventh and four in the eighth to pull away.
Matt Croglio (1-1) earned the win for the Crusaders, while A.J. Holland (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Taylor finished the contest with two hits and a pair of runs scored to lead the SJU offense.
The Hawks will return to Brooks Field for one more game against UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
