PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's has announced its men's basketball schedule for the 2010-11 season. The Hawks' slate includes 11 games at the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena and contests against 15 opponents that reached postseason play in 2010. Game times and the complete television schedule will be announced at a later date.
The Hawks open the season on November 12, hosting Western Kentucky at Hagan Arena, followed by a road game at Penn State on November 16, that can be seen on ESPN3.com.
After consecutive tournament appearances in the EA Sports Maui Invitational and the Paradise Jam, the Hawks will stay local this year for Thanksgiving. Saint Joseph's is the city's representative in the three-game Philly Hoops Classic, joining Fairfield, Norfolk State and Rutgers in the field. The Hawks will host Norfolk State on November 20 at Hagan Arena, then travel to Fairfield on November 23. The Hawks will meet Rutgers at The Palestra on November 26 in a doubleheader, with Fairfield taking on Norfolk State in the other game, to close out play in the Philly Hoops Classic.
The Hawks will then play a pair of city rivals in back-to-back games, taking on Drexel on December 1 at the Daskalakis Center and then Villanova on December 3 at The Pavilion in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU.
A trip to Princeton on December 5 will mark the Hawks' third straight road game, with SJU returning home on December 8 to host Minnesota. Saint Joseph's will then play three more on the road when it visits Creighton (Dec. 11), Boston University (Dec. 21) and Holy Cross (Dec. 28). SJU closes out 2010 hosting Siena on New Year's Eve.
The Hawks open the Atlantic 10 season with consecutive home games against Duquesne (Jan. 5) and George Washington (Jan. 8). SJU makes its Midwestern trip with back-to-back games at Dayton (Jan. 12) and Saint Louis (Jan. 15) before returning home to host Rhode Island (Jan. 19).
Saint Joseph's will then play three consecutive games at The Palestra beginning with the January 22nd date with Penn. The Hawks will be the visiting team against La Salle on January 26, and will host Temple on January 29 in an ESPNU broadcast.
After a February 2nd game at Richmond, the Hawks will finish out the year with home games against Massachusetts (Feb. 5), Xavier (Feb. 16), St. Bonaventure (Feb. 26) and the regular season home finale versus Richmond (March 2). Saint Joseph's will play Fordham on February 13 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., take on Temple at the Liacouras Center on February 20, and travel to UMass on February 23, with all four games being televised on the CBS College Sports Regional network. The Hawks will close out the regular season at Charlotte on March 5.
The 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship will follow the same format that was introduced last season. The top 12 teams will qualify for the Championship, with the first round games being held on Tuesday, March 8 on the campuses of teams seeded #5, #6, #7, and #8. The Championship then shifts to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., as the top four seeded teams will receive a bye into the quarterfinal round, scheduled for Friday, March 11. Semifinal action will take place on Saturday, March 12, with the championship game to be held on Sunday, March 13 and broadcast on CBS.
