LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Ahmad Nivins scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead St. Joseph's to a 75-63 win over Bellarmine on Friday night at the NABC Classic at Freedom Hall.
D.J. Rivera added a career-high 19 points to go with six steals, five rebounds and four assists for the Hawks (5-2). St. Joseph's dominated the lane, outscoring the Knights (3-3) 44-18 in the paint and outrebounding them 38-27. The Hawks shot 50 percent from the floor and forced 22 turnovers.
Dzaflo Larkai led Bellarmine, a Division II school from Louisville, with 19 points. Adam Brames and Matt Otte had 12 points each for the Knights.
Bellarmine kept it interesting throughout. Each time the Hawks seemed ready to pull away, Bellarmine would rally.
The Knights pulled within 62-59 with just over four minutes left, but St. Joseph's responded with a 8-0 run to put the game out of reach.
The NABC Classic continues Saturday. Bellarmine plays Ohio at 4:30 p.m., followed by St. Joseph's and Louisville at 7 p.m.
Earlier Friday, Louisville beat Ohio 74-71 in the opening game of the Classic.
