CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Saint Joseph's (0-10) put runs on the board late, but Virginia (12-2) scored in seven of eight frames to defeat the Hawks 14-3 and complete the sweep of a three game weekend series at Davenport Field at UVa Baseball Stadium. Sophomore Jereme Scott led the Hawks at the plate going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Cavaliers scored single runs in each of the first three innings and then took command of the game with three runs in the fourth inning off SJU starter Bob Unkel to push the lead to 6-0.
The Cavaliers added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
Saint Joseph's pulled within 7-2 in the top of the seventh when Mike Gentile's base hit scored Adriano Petrutz. Scott then singled in Greg Mason, who reached on a fielder's choice. UVA then plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh extending the lead to 10-2. A sacrifice fly made it 11-2 at the end of seven innings and a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth made it 14-2.
The Hawks scored a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Jeremy Jakubowski to provide the final margin.
Unkel (0-2) took the loss for Saint Joseph's allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings.
SJU returns to Philadelphia briefly before departing for a Florida for six games in Winter Park.
