DAYTON, OH (03/30/02) - Hawk sophomore pitchers Bill McCollum and Erik Vardijan combined to allow just two earned runs, but Dayton got four RBI from senior Aaron Reesh to defeat SJU, 5-1, and sweep a three game series at Stuart Field. Senior Pace Bradshaw and sophomore Chris McLaughlin added three hits apiece for the Crimson and Gray, who fell to 3-20-1, 1-5 A-10. The Flyers improved to 14-6, 5-1 A-10. In contrast to the opening two games of the series, the finale featured a pitchers duel between McCollum and UD's Mike Kerins. McCollum tossed 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs. Vardijan then pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and a pair of unearned runs. The Flyers opened up a 3-0 lead after three innings. UD scored a single run in the first and then added two more on Reesh's two run homer in the third. After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth, the Hawks clawed within 3-1 in the fifth. Bradshaw opened the inning with a double to the wall and then scored on a single by senior Justin Godusky. A two run double by Reesh in the bottom of the eighth added insurance for UD. The Hawks will return to the diamond on Monday to play just their second home game of the season, when SJU hosts Haverford at 3:00 PM.
