PHILADELPHIA - Andrew Moral has been selected to serve as the Saint Joseph's University Hawk mascot for 2005-06 academic year. He becomes the 29th student to represent the University as its men's basketball mascot, in a season that will mark the 50th anniversary of The Hawk.

Moral, who will be entering his senior year at the University, was chosen after the selection process that consisted of interviews with athletic department administrators and head basketball coach Phil Martelli.

"The four finalists were a remarkable statement for the excellence of the Saint Joseph's student body and the spirit that engulfs the school. For Andy to emerge from this group speaks volumes about his sense of purpose and depth of emotional commitment," said Martelli.

The Hawk is one of the most renowned mascots in all of college athletics and is one of the few mascots that travels to every game, home or away. The student who serves as the mascot has been the recipient of an endowed scholarship since 1992, and also performs the responsibilities of a team manager. Recognized by many publications over the years as the nation's top collegiate mascot, The Hawk must flap its wings continuously while in uniform and also perform figure eights on the court during timeouts.

An elementary education major who hails from North Wales, PA, Moral has been a manager for the SJU basketball team for the past two years. He is a 2002 graduate of Lansdale Catholic High School.

"I am very excited about serving the Saint Joseph's community as the 29th Hawk. It is an honor and privilege to have been selected to carry on this proud tradition. I look forward to the upcoming year," said Moral.

Aside from his work with the basketball team, Moral is the director of alumni relations for Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and has worked on numerous community service projects at Saint Joseph's, including Hand in Hand, Up `til Dawn and Project Appalachia.

Jim Brennan originated the idea for the Saint Joseph's Hawk during the 1954-55 season, and made his debut as The Hawk on January 4, 1956, in a 69-56 SJU win over La Salle at The Palestra. Saint Joseph's will celebrate that golden anniversary in the upcoming 2005-06 season.
