NORRISTOWN, PA - Erupting for a season-highs of 17 hits and 16 runs, the Saint Joseph's baseball team (12-26) broke open a one-run ball game with a seven run sixth inning and cruised to a 16-6 victory over Long Island (9-18) in non-league action at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Freshman Jeremy Jakubowski homered and drove in five runs. Senior Nick Baldasari added three hits.

LIU took the early lead against St. Joe's, scoring a couple of unearned runs in the top of the first and adding a run in the second for a 3-1 lead.

SJU, however, took the lead for good with a four run second. Three straight singles opened the frame. Rob Pimpinella then plated a run with a fielder's choice and then Jakubowski followed with a bases clearing three-run homer to left center to put the Hawks up 5-3.

The Blackbirds got a run back in the top of the sixth to cut the Hawk lead to one at 5-4, but SJU then erupted for seven runs in the home half of the sixth to break the game open. SJU sent 12 men to the plate and at one point seven straight Hawks reached base. Big hits included a two-run double by Jakubowski, a two-run triple by freshman Chris Hildreth and a two-run single by sophomore Kevin Walsh.

The teams traded a pair of runs in the seventh and SJU closed out the scoring when senior Rob Pimpinella plated a couple of runs with a triple in the eighth.

The game was called with one out in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness.

Hawk freshman Matt Gilbert (2-2) threw six solid innings, allowing just two earned runs and seven hits, while striking out three to earn his second straight win. Pete Orsi (1-1) allowed 10 runs and 10 hits in 5.1 innings to suffer the loss.

Jakubowski went 2-4 with two runs and five RBI. Baldasari was 3-5 with two runs and two RBI. Four other Hawks had two hits each.

LIU's Trey Bell was 3-4. Three other Blackbirds had two hits apiece.

SJU returns to the diamond on Wendnesday evening against Lehigh at Limeport Stadium.
