DAYTON, Ohio - Five early runs were enough for Dayton as the Flyers completed a weekend sweep of the Saint Joseph's baseball team, winning 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
Dayton (23-29 overall, 12-12 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs coming on a fielder's choice by Aaron Dunsmore and a Cole Tyrell RBI groundout.
The Flyers extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third on a double by Dunsmore and a two-run home run by Tyrell.
Saint Joseph's (18-26 overall, 13-11 Atlantic 10) had an opportunity in the top of the sixth, getting its first two runners on via singles, but UD starter Mike Hauschild got a strikeout, groundout, and fly out to end the inning without ceding a run.
The Hawks finally broke through in the seventh when Quinn Renner singled to left with runners on second and third and two out. Drew Smith scored, but Joe Cook was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
SJU also had two on with one out in the eighth, but reliever Trent Haughn retired both hitters he faced in the frame to allow the Flyers to escape the inning unscathed. Haughn then got the final three outs in the ninth for his third save of the season.
The Hawks will return to Campbell's Field for their final four games of the season, hosting Delaware on Tuesday at noon before Xavier comes to town for a series beginning on Thursday.
