PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Will Daniels scored 21 points and hit 11-of-12 free throws while Keith Cothran added 17 to lead Rhode Island past Saint Joseph's 86-81 on Saturday.
Jimmy Baron added 14 points and Joe Mbang had 10 for the Rams (10-8, 3-1 Atlantic 10), who won their second game in a row.
They also won for the first time in Philadelphia since a 73-67 victory in 1998-99. Rhode Island had lost 11 of its last 13 games against Saint Joseph's.
Ahmad Nivins tied his career-high with 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds for the Hawks. Pat Calathes added career-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds for Saint Joseph's (10-6, 3-1), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Rhode Island shot 53 percent from the field in the first half and jumped out to a 46-31 lead at halftime.
Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli remained at half-court after halftime to argue with the officials and was assessed a technical foul. Baron hit both free throws before the second half started for a 48-31 advantage.
The Hawks scored the first seven points of the second half to cut the lead to 48-38 before the Rams responded with a 12-5 run for a 60-43 advantage with 11:47 remaining.
Saint Joseph's made a late push and got within two points, 83-81, on a basket by Calathes with 49.7 seconds left, before falling short.
