PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team took to the court on Saturday morning for its first practice of the season. The Hawks return nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's 18-14 squad.

Head coach Phil Martelli, now in his 13th season, announced that senior Rob Ferguson and junior Tasheed Carr have been elected co-captains by their teammates. Ferguson, a 6-8 forward, averaged 11.3 points per game for the Hawks last season, while shooting 45.6 percent from the field. Carr will be making his debut this year after transferring to Saint Joseph's from Iowa State. The Philadelphia native sat out last season and will have two years of eligibility on Hawk Hill.

The Hawks' top two returning scorers and rebounders are Ahmad Nivins and Pat Calathes. Nivins, who was an All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection last year, averaged 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 2006-07. Calathes was an All-Conference Third Team honoree who averaged 13.9 points and 7.1 rebounds last season.

Saint Joseph's opens the season in the NIT Season Tip-Off on November 12 against Fairleigh Dickinson, at Syracuse's Carrier Dome. The Hawks will then play either Syracuse or Siena on November 13, with the team that wins two games advancing to the NIT Semifinals on November 21 at Madison Square Garden. SJU's first home game is November 27 against Ball State.
