PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore righthander A.J. Holland was voted the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. Voting for the weekly award was conducted by the head coaches and sports information directors of the five Division I baseball-playing universities in the Philadelphia region.
Jon Gyles of La Salle won the Big 5 Player of the Week award.
Holland, a native of Margate, N.J., was spectacular this week, throwing nine and two-thirds innings of shutout ball while allowing just seven hits. He started Wednesday's contest at Delaware and went four solid innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out three.
On Sunday, Holland earned his first win of the season, coming on with one out and the tying run on second in the bottom of the fourth at St. Bonaventure. He escaped the situation and gave up just four hits and two walks the rest of the way as the Hawks cruised to a 10-1 win.
The Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday night as they take on the Camden Riversharks in an exhibition game slated for 5:50 p.m. at Campbell's Field. Admission to the game is free.
Holland and Gyles could face-off this weekend as the Explorers will come to Campbell's Field for a critical three-game set. Saint Joseph's sits one game behind La Salle in the Atlantic 10 standings in a five-way tie for fourth place. Friday's game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games will be at 1:00 p.m. and noon, respectively.
