PHILADELPHIA (11/1/01) ? After being ranked in the Top 10 by numerous preseason magazine and internet polls, the Saint Joseph's University men's basketball team found out that all those prognosicators were right on target as the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll ranked the Hawks #10 in its preseason poll. The ranking is the highest by a major poll since SJU finished the 1965-66 season fifth in the nation. That year was also the last time that the Hawks appeared in a major preseason poll. The Associated Press poll is due to be announced on Monday, November 5. There had been indications since the summer that Phil Martelli's Hawks were headed to a high preseason ranking. CBS Sportsline was the first preseason poll, ranking SJU #12 in April. They have since moved the Hawks to #8 in that poll. SJU is also ranked #8 by The Sporting News and Athlon Magazine, the highest ranking so far in the preseason. ESPN.com lists the Hawks at #9 in the polls. Defending NCAA Champion Duke is #1 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll with 30 of 31first place votes. Illinois, ranked #2, holds the other first place vote. Virginia is 11th and is followed by Michigan State, Memphis, Georgetown, Stanford, Boston College, A-10 and Big Five rival Temple, Oklahoma State, North Carolina and Syracuse. The last five are Indiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Southern California and Fresno State.
