NEW YORK, NY (11/13/03) - Saint Joseph's point guard Jameer Nelson has been named to the 2003-04 Preseason All-America 1st Team by the Associated Press. Nelson was also chosen to ESPN's All-America 1st Team giving the senior a clean sweep of All-America 1st Team honors prior to the year. Nelson, a candidate for National Player of the Year honors, leads the 17th-ranked into the season opener on Friday, November 14 against #10 Gonzaga in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden. Game time is 9:00 p.m. for the contest which will be televised on ESPN2. Nelson and his Hawk teammates will have a partisan crowd at Madison Square Garden as close to 4,000 Saint Joseph's suppporters will be in attendance. SJU has broken the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic ticket record for one school, surpassing Connecticut (3,200) and Duke (3,000). More than 20 buses of Hawk fans will leave from the Saint Joseph's campus at 3 p.m. on Friday. Head coach Phil Martelli, now in his 9th season, will make an early-morning television appearance leading up to the game. Martelli and Gonzaga coach Mark Few will appear on the new morning show, "Cold Pizza" on ESPN2 on Friday morning. The segment will begin at 7:37 a.m.
