PITTSBURGH - Rob Ferguson made all seven of his shots and Pat Calathes scored a career-high 17 points to lead Saint Joseph's to a 79-63 win over Duquesne in the regular-season finale at the Palumbo Center.
The Hawks now have five straight wins entering next week's Atlantic 10 Championship in Cincinnati. SJU will await the conclusion of A-10 play for its seeding and opponent to be determined. Unofficially, the Hawks have clinched the fifth seed and will play #12 Dayton on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The official pairings for the tournament will be announced following the conference finale, Fordham at Temple, on Sunday at noon.
Ferguson had 10 points in the first half, making his first four shots, including two 3-pointers. The Hawks led from the start and after Duquesne took a 19-16 lead at 12:02, SJU rattled off seven straight points to go up 26-19 for good.
SJU led by as much as 23 points in the second half as Duquesne fell to 3-24 and 1-15 in the league. DU's head coach Danny Nee had announced his resignation on Friday afternoon, which took effect after today's game.
The Hawks are now 15-12 and 9-7, having assured their sixth consecutive winning season and the eighth in Phil Martelli's 11 years.
