NEW YORK, NY - Saint Joseph's will face Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the 2007 Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament, on November 12 at Syracuse's Carrier Dome, as the tournament's 16-team field was announced today by the National Invitation Tournament.
The Hawks will participate in the East Regional along with host Syracuse and Siena, which will also meet on November 12. The championship and consolation games follow the next day, November 13, also at the Carrier Dome.
The winner of the bracket advances to the NIT semifinals on November 21 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The semifinal doubleheader will be televised nationally on ESPN2 beginning at 7 p.m. The championship doubleheader will be played on November 23, with the consolation tipping off at 4:30 p.m. and the final at 7 p.m. Both games will be televised on ESPN.
"For our players, have the opportunity to participate in a prestigious event such as NIT, in a storied build like the Carrier Dome, and hopefully Madison Square Garden, is the type of experience that I am looking to provide them when they come to Saint Joseph's," said coach Phil Martelli.
The West Regional takes place on November 13-14 with Washington hosting the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Utah facing High Point in first-round games.
The Midwest Regional is set for November 12-13 at Ohio State, with the host Buckeyes facing Wisconsin-Green Bay. Columbia and Delaware State round out that bracket.
Texas A&M will host the South Regional on November 13-14, with the home team taking on Oral Roberts, and Texas-El Paso playing Texas A&M- Corpus Christi in the second game.
Saint Joseph's has participated in the Preseason NIT only once before, in 1996-97, when the Hawks lost at 10th-ranked Duke.
The NIT Season Tip-Off, formerly know as the Preseason NIT, began in 1985. An independent at-large committee chooses the field for this event as well as the Postseason NIT. More info can be found at www.nit.org.
