March 11, 2001 The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee released the brackets this evening at 6:30 PM, and the St. Joseph's Hawks found themselves among the pairings for the "Big Dance," earning the first at-large invitation in the school's storied history. As the # 9 seed in the West Region, The Hawks will face 8th-seeded Georgia Tech of the ACC on Thursday in San Diego, CA. The seeding has an odd sort of symmetry to it, as the last St. Joseph's team to qualify for the tournament, the 1996-97 Atlantic 10 Championship Squad, also traveled to the West Region as part of their Sweet 16 campaign. The Hawks were also a # 9 seed when they pulled off perhaps the greatest victory in St. Joseph's history, knocking off top-ranked and # 1-seeded DePaul in 1981. The 1980-81 squad advanced all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before losing to the eventual champion, Indiana.
