PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's junior right-handed pitcher Jeff Williams has been selected as the Philadelphia Diamond Five Pitcher of the Week, , in voting conducted by the area head coaches. It is the second time this season Williams has been honored with the award.
Williams took a no-hitter into the ninth inning but received a no-decision as SJU went 12 innings against Saint Louis on Sunday. He struck out seven batters in nine scoreless frames, surrendering just one hit, as the Hawks went on to win 2-1.
Penn junior Joey Boaen was named the Diamond Five Player of the Week. Boaen batted .625 with eight RBI for the Quakers, while Williams threw nine shutout innings of one-hit ball for the Hawks.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, the Diamond Five is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Diamond Five will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday. The first-ever All-Diamond Five team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
